adolescence: (adōlesïns) n. 1. The period of time between childhood and adulthood in a living organism, adulthood being the period at which development ceases and the organism begins to deteriorate, which, in humans, tends to happen from around 13 to around 20, give or take a couple, depending on whether or not this person is a male or a female, how mature, mentally, the person is and how mature, physically, the person is, and depending on certain cultural phenomena, like “rites of passage” where they make some kid walk across embers in bare feet and don’t allow him to even, like, wince, from the heat, or else he’s not a man yet, or maybe he must lose his virginity in order to become a man, which puts a ton of pressure on the poor kid, which, this kind of thing doesn’t happen as often with women, because with women it’s more like ‘can you have kids yet or what? OK you’re a woman. Hold this.’ and we’ve never really thought of making girls do crazy tasks to prove themselves “women,” but instead we throw them a party or something (see quinceañera), but that’s fine with me, it’s not like I’m complaining; the most awkward time of one’s life, when one keeps a close, almost obsessive, count of body hairs at any given time and racks him- or herself about how and as what or whom other people perceive them, besides as a person whose clothes never really fit, for better or for worse; a period of slow sexual maturation characterized by girls’ and boys’ experience with blood puzzles and cantankerous erections in math class, respectively, by the dropping of the testicles and lowering of voice in the male, and by the transformation of women into total bitches; the blossoming of the adult human organism; a person’s first act of intercourse 2. the process of any sort of maturation of a thing; a societal organization; a financial breakthrough, as of a company; a blooming; a coming to fruition; a polishing; the beginning of the end.
